Lydia went back to the OR again today for lucky procedure #13. She’s been doing relatively well the past week and they’ve been able to turn down the pressure settings on her vent so hopefully we are getting close to extubation. Monday they noticed she had an abscess a the site of her right thoracotomy incision. Dr. Jennings wanted to bring her to the OR today for an exploration of her chest to make sure she didn’t have a deeper infection. Fortunately, all the tissue looked healthy and no infection around her esophagus. We’re still not completely sure what caused her to become so sick last weekend and not be able to be off antibiotics. Hopefully we’re still on track for surgery to put the esophagus back on traction the second or third week of October. If all goes well with the MA board of medicine, Dr. Foker should be getting his license the first week of October.
I had a good visit with her last weekend. She was comfortable and I was able to hold her quite a bit. She was even rather smiley with the vent. I’m sure it helps to have some happy meds on board. I met some other EA families and went to Brandon’s Run a fundraiser for the Esophageal Atresia Center in Boston. Both Dr. Jennings and Dr. Foker came out for the event. It was great to see so many toddlers running about the event after undergoing the same procedure Lydia is going through. Maybe next year we can be there only on the other side of this crazy adventure!
